My sisters and I were on our way to Eden Mall to have dinner at the Chicken Mania when our lives would be altered permanently in a bad way. As usual, Jessica was driving us down Interstate 64 and this evening we expected nothing to be different. As we got closer to the Virginia Beach/Chesapeake city line on our way to the mall, that's when it all changed. The last thing I remembered was Jessica preparing to change lanes to exit the HOV lane since our exit, Greenbrier Parkway, was coming up. She started to change lanes, giving the proper signaling and being careful about it (Jess is the kind to do 55 in a 55 zone), when all of the sudden, our car (actually, our mother's car) was smacked hard on my side. What I learned was that our trunk was smashed and the driver side back, where I was sitting, was somewhat crushed. The next thing I remember was that I was in an intensive care room at Gainsborough General Hospital with both of my sisters at my side. I would learn that there was a mentally ill person driving the wrong way down 64 and, since they weren't wearing a seatbelt, they were pronounced dead on the scene. |
